The O-1 visa is a US work visa for people with extraordinary ability or achievement. You will also see it written as the O1 visa or simply the O visa. It is the same classification. It has no annual cap and no lottery, which is why founders, researchers, artists and athletes look at it when other work visas are out of reach.
The two tracks: O-1A and O-1B
- O-1A covers the sciences, education, business and athletics.
- O-1B covers the arts, and extraordinary achievement in motion pictures and television.
Not sure which applies? Our O-1 visa page compares the two, and the O-1A criteria and O-1B criteria guides show what each one asks for.
What a petition has to show
For the O-1A, a petition shows a major internationally recognised award, or meets at least three of eight listed criteria. For the O-1B in the arts, it shows a significant national or international award or prize, or meets at least three of six listed criteria. USCIS then looks at the evidence as a whole to decide whether it shows extraordinary ability.
Who files the petition
A US employer, a US agent, or a foreign employer acting through a US agent files the petition on Form I-129. It must be accompanied by a written advisory opinion, called a consultation, from a peer group or a person with expertise in your field. USCIS also advises filing at least 45 days before the work begins, and no earlier than one year before the services are needed.
This is where the agent route matters. If you do not have a single employer, a US agent can file for you, and that is the role Talent Bridges plays as your US agent petitioner.

How long it lasts
An initial O-1 stay can be up to three years, and extensions are granted in increments of up to one year. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 may be eligible for O-3 status.
Is the O-1 right for you?
If your work has been recognised outside your own circle, through awards, press, a leading role, high pay or original contributions, it is worth a careful look. A free evaluation tells you which track fits and what evidence to build first.
Talent Bridges is not a law firm. Every petition is prepared and reviewed in coordination with licensed US immigration attorneys.
